At Birthing Belonging, we honour the diverse experiences that shape each person, and we work alongside individuals and communities to create opportunities for people to show up as they are, connect with others, and feel a little more at home in the world.

Rainbow Kin isn’t only childbirth and early parenting education; it’s an opportunity to connect with others and learn about how to advocate for you & your family. Our next sessions are coming up in Jan!

It came as no surprise that I ended up working in healthcare, as evidenced by 6 year old little me dressing up.

Whilst my career in healthcare has been hugely transformative and rewarding, it has also been at times challenging, overwhelming and disheartening. Providing care in a system which is inherently flawed isn’t easy.

At Birthing Belonging we offer mentoring for LGBTQIA+ student and early career Midwives and Nurses because we know the benefit of having support and an encouraging voice.

This week is Birth Trauma Awareness Week. We’re committed to continuing to amplify the voices of parents who have experienced birth trauma, this week and beyond.

Birth trauma can involve physical, emotional, or moral injury during labour and birth. Often, it’s not just about what happened, but how you were treated, how you were made to feel.

These slides include Birthing Affirmations, a gentle reminder of the respect and safety you and your family deserve. 

At Birthing Belonging, we believe that inclusive, respectful education is essential to improving perinatal experiences.

In my broader midwifery work, I support the development of inclusive practice through training midwives and students, and contribute to policy that promote equity in mental health care.

Through Birthing Belonging, we offer trauma-informed childbirth and early parenting education that is grounded in compassion, safety, and affirmation. 

We also mentor LGBTQIA+ healthcare professionals and students because our community deserves a healthcare system that reflects its diversity, and those within it deserve connection and support. 

We acknowledge that many in our community navigate intersecting identities and experience discrimination in complex ways and that must be recognised in every space we show up 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🖤🤎

I attended a panel discussion today as part of IDAHOBIT. Amongst so much wisdom shared by the panel, Sally said “We need to be allies to each other”.

I think many of us in the LGBTQIA+ community are increasingly aware of the political landscape globally and rise in discrimination, particularly transphobia.

Whilst I will not pretend to have all the answers, what I will say is…
The majority of the Birthing Belonging Team are part of the LGBTQIA+ community and our ethos is very much “By community, for community”.

That being said, we represent only a part of the community, noting the impacts of intersectionality and the reality that we are all unique individuals.

We are committed to continuing to listen and learn how to be allies to our community.

Introducing the founder/ excited gal behind Birthing Belonging…

My journey through midwifery and public health has always been about more than health care — it’s been about connection, inclusion, and making sure people feel like they belong.

Once a self-proclaimed social butterfly 🦋 I have found myself also increasingly a homebody. Home has become a place of safety and rest, where I can be myself.

It’s from both my professional and my personal experience of the world that Birthing Belonging was dreamt✨

I don’t yet know exactly what Birthing Belonging will become, and that’s part of its beauty — it’s fluid, evolving, and open, but at its core, it’s about belonging, inclusion, authenticity, support, connection, and building community 🌈

Sunflowers, anything glittery/fluffy/cute/colourful, painting/being generally crafty, anything queer related 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️the sound of the ocean and my chosen family (includes our two kitties!) 🌻

My fav song? That’s too hard but I loveeee”How far I’ll go” is definitely up there.
